Why A Rappelling Fundraiser Is A Great Idea For A Charity Event

By Maria Perry

Charity events held to invite sponsors or voluntary donors to extend donations in support of a certain cause are called fundraisers. When presented and marketed the right way, fundraising events can be a great means of funding and raising awareness on certain issues. Currently, newer and more creative ideas have been developed by fundraisers for these events. An example is a rappelling fundraiser.

When support from federal sources is no longer available, promoters try to get creative. The most popular type of fundraiser is the fun run and for a good reason. In joining 3k, 5k, 10k, 21k, and 42k races, people do not only get to tick one thing off their bucket list, but they also have the motivation to run for a cause. Another example of an extremely successful fundraiser was the ice bucket challenge for ALS in 2014.

The challenge quickly gained popularity after celebrities joined in on the event and shared their videos on social media. A bucket filled with ice and cold water is had to be poured over the heads of participants and if they decline the challenge, they had to donate to the cause, which was Lou Gehrigs disease. Participants could even tag three other people to participate in the challenge.

With the help of celebrities, it became viral on social media and people started talking about ALS. Newspapers, news outlets, and magazines have even documented the novel idea. Another version of the challenge resurfaced a year later because of the magnitude of its success.

Not only was it successful in raising money, but it was also successful in spreading awareness for the disease. Fundraisers are not easy to organize. In order to achieve success, organizers often shape these charity events into different forms of publicity stunts.

The fundraiser is included among the list of these fairly new gimmicks. Strapped to a harness, participants will rappel along a building several stories high. With or without the media personnel filming the event, onlookers from streets below are easily drawn to watching the daredevil participants take on the stunt.

Of course, safety precautions are the primary concern in events like this. Reliable equipment and training seminars are facilitated by professionals to teach willing participants the proper guidelines before the day of the event. Apart from gaining the attention of adventurous people, it is also a perfect concept for a publicized charity event.

With stakes at an all time high, everything is double checked to assure the safety of everyone involved in the project. When a suitable building has been found, permits must be acquired from the establishment. Slowly, the full realization of the project will be achieved and participants will be seen walking on the side of a ten story building in no time.

Usually, participants donate a minimum amount to be able to register. They will not only be able to try out an exhilarating experience, but they will even be supporting a good cause. Organizations like Over the Edge and United Way have already successfully facilitated similar fundraisers and raised over a hundred thousand to one million dollars. In the end, everyone from the participants, event organizers, and beneficiaries gain something from the program.
