Facts About Stainless Steel Screw Conveyor

By Nancy Walker

A screw conveyor is a mechanism used in many industries to move granular and liquid materials for various processes. The name auger conveyor is sometimes used to refer to them. The system was invented several years ago by a Greek scientist named Archimedes. Today, the machine enjoys a lot of use and popularity in a wide range of industrial and commercial applications.

Even though various types of screw conveyors exist, the one that is most commonly used is the horizontal auger conveyor. It is used to convey bulk goods from one place to another. There are various materials, configurations, lengths, and sizes of these systems. Steel is one of the materials used to make conveyors, making stainless steel screw conveyor prominent. Devices like belt conveyors, gravimetric feeders, rotary airlock, or screw drivers are usually used to control the inlet of the system.

The discharge side is the conventional point of installation of the drive unit. The reason that this end is recommended is because it is the one responsible for displacing bulk material to the drive end. Reduced tear and wear is achieved using this arrangement by ensuring that every part of the conveyor experiences the same tension produced by the commodity being moved.

Auger conveyors have their own disadvantages linked to them. To begin with, they are perfect for conveying semi-fluid and dry semi-fluid materials. Furthermore, when compared to other conveyors like belt conveyors, pneumatic, and aeromechanical, screw conveyors are more effective in terms of cost. The efficiency in bulk material distribution is allowed for by the availability of multiple inlet and discharge points. Finally, the system is enclosed totally from corrosive, hazardous, and dusty environments, which helps to keep it safe and durable.

An additional type of screw conveyors is the inclined conveyor. It is often used at an angle from the horizontal line. The angel of inclination can be as high as 45 degrees or as low as a few degrees. If the angle is in excess of 45 degrees, the system is deemed as vertical and not inclined any more. The KWS engineering Guide for vertical conveyors is to be used to set up vertical conveyors.

Increasing the angle of inclination usually increases the horsepower requirements of the system, while reducing the level of efficiency. The reduction in efficiency is caused by the effects of gravity as bulk materials fall back. Other factors that affect efficiency include characteristics of the materials being conveyed and type of conveyor in use. It is often recommendable to keep the angle of inclination to the lowest level possible.

Another kind of conveying system is the shaftless screw conveyor. This system discharges bulk material from centrifuges, mixers, or filter presses. It is used to convey materials that would otherwise be hard to convey on other models of conveyors. It is also effective at conveying bulk material that have high amounts of moisture content. With good design, this system does not clog.

Shaftless conveyors are in wide use in many industries including chemical, food, and minerals processing plants. Also, wastewater treatment industries have use for shaftless conveyors. Producers are required to adhere to the various design standards that exist in the market for these systems. Each country tends to have its own standards.
