The Different Components Of Golf Course Irrigation

By Helen Phillips

Irrigation systems are now becoming more useful ever since sprinklers were developed. Manufacturers nowadays have been offering product mixtures not only for maximizing the irrigation control but as well as for irrigating the grounds. One of the simplest types of irrigation systems are those that are being used in most residential houses which are made up of controllers connected to valves.

However, because of the reason that turf maintenance has a high quality, these systems are becoming very complex and is continuously increasing. And thus, the golf course irrigation systems can be considered as complex as well for residential uses. The reasons include various requirements of water, high volume in irrigated areas, and low height when mowing. So here are the following components for the system and their development.

First, central control. Due to complexity and size, the purpose of the system is to act as a network for the controllers. Among all the networks, central control is considered as the brain. Usually, it is located along with the maintenance facilities. This also serves as the control to the sprinklers in golf courses. The system is software based and is capable of monitoring the flow management, weather stations, and real time activities.

Second, field controllers. These can sometimes be referred to as satellites. The location of these are inside the metal boxes which are mounted to concrete footings. A central systems will send the directions into the sub component or the field controller and will also send a message to the sprinkler when turning on or off. The controllers have a connection with sprinklers and a central system does not have.

Third, the central control for a satellite communication. When programs have been set to computers, a central control will be the one to send directions to the satellite since computers cannot be able to directly communicate with a satellite but can communicate with an interface. A interface interprets and sends instructions. The satellite communications are either two way or one way.

Fourth are the weather stations and the weather sensors. The advantage if this component is to get the exact conditions instead of readings coming from regional weather services. The data which are being collected from the weather stations would include rainfall, humidity, wind speed, and soil moisture.

Evapotranspiration is a process where in there is a total water loss due to transpiration and evaporation. Its level is often high especially when the season is sunny, hot, or low humidity and low during cloudy, cool, or high humidity seasons. The irrigation processes would replace the moisture of soil during evapotranspiration.

The utilization of sensor decoders are very similar to its use in valves. Sensors for the soil moisture and for temperature are connected into these. And through this, the data is downloaded directly to central system.

And fifth, storm protection. A storm protection is very important. One most common type of damage in an irrigation system that may possibly happen is power surge which may probably result to some lightning strikes. These lightning strikes can cause electrical surges that will run through wires, thus, damaging the sprinklers and some other important equipment. Systems used in lightning protection will be installed in electrical components in the system.
