Useful And Essential Facts About How To Trap A Gopher

By Henry Harris

Gophers usually live in tunnels that they make in the ground. They also use the tunnels as food stores and for movement around lawns. Tunnels dug by one gopher can extend up to several meters in length. Digging tunnels results in the deposition of soil mounds on the surface. Homeowners usually rely on these mounds to detect the presence of moles in an area. This is worth knowing about How to trap a gopher.

In absence of the mounds of soil, it would be difficult to detect these animals in the soil. Whenever they invade a place, gophers can be quite destructive. They damage landscaping by a huge extent using the mounds of soil that they deposit. They may also eat up roots of plants in the landscaping, making them dry up. If not controlled in time, they usually spread to surrounding properties.

Gophers are normally attracted to a place that is near sources of food and water. They eat up a wide variety of insects and other substances, but worms make their best and most preferred source of food. Existence of water leakage form a tap may also lure them to a place. Therefore, when one notices the presence of moles in their compound, they need to start by figuring out what is luring them.

At times, taking away the source of food may drive them away to another location, even though this may not happen straight away. Normally, gophers are solitary animals, meaning that they exist alone, not in colonies or groups. If one notices a gopher in their lawn, it may be just a single animal and getting rid of it may solve the whole problem. If worms, which are their favorite food source exist in large number, however, a lot of gophers may be lured to that place.

If removing food source does not send the moles away, one should buy a mole trap. This is the single most effective way of handling the problem. There is a wide collection of different traps that have been designed for use in this work. The level of efficiency of different traps usually varies, with some being very effective while others not so much.

Chances of making the process successful are increased by using gloves when handling the equipment used for trapping. Using gloves prevents foreign scent from spreading into the tunnel where the gophers live. Chances of the gopher being the only occupant of the tunnel are very high since these animals are highly solitary and live alone.

Handling traps with bare hand will leave some foreign scents in the barrows. The moles can easily catch the scent since they have a very strong sense of smell. Foreign scent on the traps can also be removed by having them cleaned thoroughly. This should be done immediately after buying the traps before they start to be used. The cleaning should also be done after handling the traps without gloves and also after they have been used to catch the rodents.

It is also recommendable that the soil around the tunnel is moistened a little prior to putting up traps. This can be made possible by watering the lawn adequately. Watering the soil attract gophers to the location. The animals tend to be attracted to upper networks of their tunnels when the lawn is irrigated. This increases the likelihood of the gophers being caught in the traps set.
