How To Establish A Georgia Pecan Farm

By Diane McDonald

Pecan farming is one of the fastest-growing agricultural ventures that one can decide on. Even so, it needs someone who is considering a long-term investment since it can go for more than eight years without getting the first harvest. One should also seek knowledge from someone who has experience in this type of farming. Below are considerations to make when starting a Georgia Pecan farm.

Acquaint with the right planting weather. The possibility of being successful in such a venture depends on the weather conditions of the location of an aspiring pecan farmer. The best weather condition is a mild climate which can manage to support extended seasons. The temperatures should not drop below negative twenty-nine degrees and a maximum of fifty-five degrees.

Consider the cost of starting the farm. The value of launching such an orchard depends on the size of land you intend to cultivate and the number of trees one wants to plant. Look for a former farm budget that you can rely on to determine the average amount that you need for the whole process. Large scale farmers prefer employing a professional farm manager to handle the budgeting process.

Decide whether to use cultivators. Cultivators are plants that can withstand a farm that has scabs or not. You can either pick an intolerant plant or a tolerant one. Those located in high-humid areas should consider using intolerant ones since there are high possibilities of getting scabs. Some of the varieties include the western, Caddo and the Apalachee.

Check the number of trees that you will plant in a particular space. Traditionally, farmers tended to plant these tree at about three to eight trees in every acre. However, such periods have passed on due to the high values of land. Therefore, modern farmers have adopted a high-density spacing method which allows a maximum of forty-nine trees at each acre.

Determine the right planting method. There are a variety of planting methods that one can adopt. The most common means include planting grafted but bare-root plants, grafted but potted and rootstocks that need grafting. Either way, it is ideal to get the trees from a nursery when they are one year old and above for easier management.

Learn about the nutrition needed by the plant. Young trees require food and water. One should focus on food and water after planting this type of tree. The essential nutrient necessary for root growth is phosphate. It helps the young plant to develop root hairs which become feeder roots eventually. You need an in-depth analysis of the soil to determine the best nutrients that suit them.

Determine the diseases and pest control methods. There are common pests that can affect pecan trees such as coconut bug, stinkbugs and the codding moths. Make sure that you get sprays that can eliminate them and are safe for the nuts. Besides that, you need to spray anti-scab products during the humid period when they are prevalent. You should also prune the trees after their full growth to make spraying easier.
