Cypher Entertainment Freestyle Collaboration Versus Cypher Battle

By Catherine Allen

When it comes to rap, there are a number of different styles. For example, there are traditional rap musicians and freestyle rappers. In most cases, the latter is a form of improvised rapping. Whereas, traditional rappers often use prescribed lyrics and music. When it comes to a Cypher Entertainment Freestyle Collaboration, it is often a meeting of the minds of two or more artists.

The term rap and freestyle have taken on different definitions over the years. In addition, in the past many well known rappers referred to improvisational rap as nothing more than individuals bragging about oneself. Whereas, some also labeled the genre as more associated with the spoken word scene than a musical genre.

It was the 1980s when rappers first started splitting the scene between traditional and improvisational styles. The 1980s were the first decade to see improvisational rappers whom were mostly about celebrating oneself rather than providing a performance based on written content. While this is the case, the improvisational aspect remains the same now though often with more substance and subject than in the past.

There are basically two types of genres in the current rap scene. These include old school and freestyle. In the first case, rappers rap from memorized or written lyrics which often tell a story. Whereas, in the latter, the performance is improvised on the spot and may or may not include a story or other content. In either case, background music is a choice whether a DJ spinning an album, recorded sound effects or live musicians.

While newer definitions exist, those in place since the 1990s are basically the same as the ones being used today. Although, it has only been recently that musical groups such as Freestyle Fellowship and others have been accepted into the genre. In addition, battles and competitions are also more common now than in the past. If interested in learning more about the genre, the film "Freestyle: The Art of Rhyme, " can provide a lot of insight.

While the genre is widely accepted today, this was not the case in the past. For, a number of experienced and professional rap artists had no respect for improvisational rap. In fact, many considered it more slam poetry than rap. As such, the genre has gone through some what of a rebirth since that time.

Most artists learn how to rap by using improvisational methods. In doing so, a number of these up and coming artists carry on back and forth conversations using a beat, or create a rhyming game in which each individual must rhyme the next line. Whereas, there are others whom use the genre for everything from entertainment and therapy to self-promotion and self-exploration.

When it comes to Cypher oriented improvisational rap, most often this refers to a contest or battle between rappers. A good example of this type contest is the show "Drop the Mic, " currently airing on the American television network "TNT." For, the show creates an environment in which two or more celebrities take on one another using this improvisational style. After which, a winner is selected based on the noise level of the audience.
