What You Can Expect From Medicare Part A Coverage

By Walter Bailey

Some people mistakenly assume once they reach sixty-five they will get free health care. Nothing could be further from the truth. Most seniors do qualify for a certain amount of medical assistance through Social Security. The insurance is limited however, and a lot of it is not without cost. Although the government sends brochures to those approaching the age of retirement, many people throw them away without reading about the benefits available through Medicare Part A coverage.

Even if you have never worked, you may be able to qualify for this benefit. You will probably have to pay for it however. The majority of seniors, who have worked for at least ten years in the United States, receive limited free medical services. If you have to go to the hospital, your care there will be covered as long as the facility you are in accepts this program. The government program pays for services, meals, and drugs while you are in the hospital. It doesn't pay for private rooms, televisions, or items like razors or socks.

Some seniors are moved into skilled nursing facilities following an operation in order to get physical therapy they could not receive in their homes. Part A will pay the expenses for a short period of time. When that period elapses, it becomes the patient's responsibility to cover the co-pay. While the insurance is in effect, it covers medicine, equipment, meals, and semi-private rooms.

Most people who move into nursing homes need custodial care. The program does not offer coverage in this circumstance. There is private insurance available that will pay for nursing home care. The cost depends of the kind of policy you buy. If you are without resources and qualify for Medicaid, your expenses may be covered with that program. You will have to find a facility that accepts Medicaid and has available space however.

Seniors who are home bound and need home health care can depend on this program to pay some of the expenses for a period of time. Skilled nursing, physical and language therapy are included in the benefits. To receive the benefits, the patient must be under the care of a physician who will authorize the services. Twenty-four hour a day care, meal delivery, housekeeping, and personal care are not included in these benefits.

Seniors facing terminal illnesses can receive the services of a hospice team under Part A. It generally pays for in-home care and for inpatient facilities. You can expect medication, therapy, nursing care, equipment, and housekeeping services to be covered. Medicaid will also pay for illness and grief counseling for you and your family.

Some people wonder who decides what Medicare pays for and how much it pays. These decisions are governed by several institutions, including federal and state governments. Medicare makes decisions on a national basis. Claims processors determine what local custom considers medically necessary.

Medical attention is expensive. Even small procedures can cost thousands of dollars. For seniors on fixed incomes, free medical care can be a life saver.
