Joseph Piacentile: What Is Retail Fraud?

By Bob Oliver

No matter how secure a store might be, the risk of merchandise being stolen still exists. This is where retail fraud comes into effect, and it's a serious subject that Joseph Piacentile can draw your attention to. There's no denying the fact that this is a criminal problem, and others can attest to this sentiment. If you're curious to know what this form of fraud entails, from a broad perspective, keep the following details in the back of your mind.

Retail fraud - or "shoplifting," as it's more commonly known - occurs when merchandise leaves the premise without payment. Items can range from simple cosmetics to expensive electronics, meaning that there is quite a diverse lineup to make note of. One of the main reasons this occurs is due to a lack of security. When there are few people who are able to prevent these occurrences, it's easy to assume that fraud can occur more commonly.

What happens as a result of retail fraud, you may wonder? According to Joseph Piacentile, workers tend to feel the impact the most. Some of them have their hours cut, resulting in less money being made. Others might have to take pay cuts, in order to make up for the costs of merchandise being taken without payment. What this means is that a greater level of security is required, which is what I'd like to discuss next.

One of the ways to prevent retail fraud is to be aware of any suspicious activity. If you see a customer looking around the store, all the while making their way toward the exit, you should feel comfortable approaching them in the calmest way possible. If this cannot be done, though, retailers should make it a point to hire more effective security guards, so that unpaid merchandise runs a lesser risk of being taken off the premises. These methods are worth noting, and names like Joe Piacentile can agree.

If retailers wish to reduce their risk of fraud, points like the ones mentioned earlier have to be discussed. This situation is detrimental to business growth, but it's not like protection is out of the question. It's just a matter of knowing how to keep security high, which goes without saying, and staying aware of any suspicious activity. If activities like these are carried out, it's easy to imagine that a greater level of security can prevent cases of retail fraud.
