American salaries have remained flat-line for a while now, even as prices continue to increase. Food costs have been specifically volatile of late, as a result of climate change, crop shortages and many additional factors. There are steps you can take to lower those costs, however.

Reducing food in the first place

It is always less expensive to cook and eat at home than it is to pay someone else to do it. You will know precisely what is in your meal, and it will cost less than going out to eat.

If you do not think you have time to cook, get a slow cooker. Throw some meat and vegetables in it in the morning and come home to a delicious stew.

Meat is expensive

Many people spend a ton of their cash on meat. As Americans, we sure like our beef in every meal. You do not have to go vegan, but you can just spend a couple of nights a week preparing meals without any kind of meat in it. You can also make your meat go farther by preparing meals with beef in it instead of making beef the primary course.

Make the most of non-organic food

There is no evidence to support that organic food is actually any healthier for you than other food, and it is much more expensive. Get some frozen vegetables instead of fresh ones for healthier and less expensive food. You can also save a little money.

Get your water

If you are worried about drinking tap water, just get a filter. Always avoid soda pop and other sugary drinks, and just stick to water. It is free and will keep your body hydrated.

Those seeking to save money on alcohol should only drink it socially and never drink it at home. That is another way to cut back.

Price of commercially prepared foods really high

Sure, the packager did most of the prep work for you, but at what cost? Like fast food, commercially prepared foods are much more costly and much less healthy than if you made the same dish at home from scratch.

Get a menu prepared

You can save a ton of cash by planning your meals for the week rather than just guessing every single day. You may want to plan two weeks at a time in order to go with your payday. Look in the pantry at what you already have, and go shopping for the rest. Always use a list when you are shopping and stick to it. If it is not on the list, you cannot get it.

If you need to cut back expenses more, you can go to a Costco or Sam's Club.

Keep away from additional costs at lunchtime

It is healthier to make a lunch at home rather than going out, so make sure you do that whenever possible.

Think to the future

You can plant a garden and get other people to do it too. This will help you save a lot of cash, particularly if you exchange with friends.
