A New Cat Owner's Guide To Choosing A Cat Sitter Randolph

By Matthew Harris

Sharing your home with a cat can be wonderful but it can also be challenging at the best of times. Leaving for vacation can be even more challenging. If you worry about how your cat will be looked after while you are away, the right cat sitter Randolph can put your fears at ease and make it possible for you to relax and

Many cats become easily stressed when taken out of familiar surroundings. Stressed cats may stop eating or may begin to spray. This behavior may start at a boarding facility and continue on even after they have returned home. If a cat stops eating, they can quickly develop other, serious health complications as a result. It is no wonder many cat owners prefer to have someone come into their home.

Cats tend to be very individual creatures. Unless they have spent time with another cat they may not do well if there are other cats in a household. Some will be able to handle the transition well and may be able to handle being around cats in a boarding situation.

While it can be tempting to try and hire a sitter who is wiling to stay at your home this may not be feasible or necessary in many cases. You will end up paying more for a sitter who is staying in your home and, unlike dogs, cats will often do well if left to their own devices with only the occasional stop in to refill food and scoop the litter box.

Medical conditions can be a definite cause for concern when it comes to your cat. Some conditions such as diabetes can require testing and medicating on a regular basis. A sitter that has some medical background and who is willing to care for your pet is likely a better choice than someone who has never cared for a medically fragile pet. Keep in mind that some sitters will charge for medication or testing that they need to do while caring for your cat.

Do you have a cat that needs play? Some cat breeds, such as Bengals, have high energy levels and if they are not provided with an outlet they can become destructive. If you have a cat that loves being active and playing, you will need to discuss that with the sitter. A good cat sitter is one who loves cats and should want to play with your pet but it is still important to discuss what your expectations are ahead of time.

You may want to draw up a series of guidelines that your sitter can work with. Outlining how often they will visit, what they will do while they are there and how they will handle any medical problems can help set you and your cat up for success.

Finding cat sitters that you can interview is easier now than it has ever been. In the past, finding someone usually involved speaking to fellow cat lovers or looking for ads on bulletin boards but now there are websites where potential sitters advertise that they are available. Asking for reviews or talking to people about their experience with a particular sitter can help you narrow down your choices and find the best sitter for your needs.
