CNC Turning Centers, Spinning Like World

By James Ross

Artisans of olden times sculpted statues and rafted weapons by hand. But times have changed, as times are wont to do. In an age of industry, sculpting and shaping metal is best done with the use of CNC turning centers.

Turning is the industrial process in which a piece metal is shaped into something else. This is accomplished by securing the metal in a lathe. The lathe then spins said metal, while a cutting is introduced to the piece and then maneuvered so that the metal is distorted and shaped into something else.

The initials CNC stand for computer numerical code. As such, CNC turning center is then a machine that automates the industrial process. The process is made more effective with automation.

The main drawback of such a piece of equipment is the cost. They can be quite expensive to purchase and quite expensive to repair should they break down. But the costs are offset by other factors, such as their efficiency and a lowered need for human intervention and manipulation. Since they are fully automated, they do not need to be manually operated by a person.

An automated machine is more effective than a manual one. Without needing rest or food, an automated machine can turn out products at a rate that a manually operated one used by a human being cannot hope to match. More products made means more products to be sold, which means more money overall. Because of the work is done by a machine with no personal touch to its work, each and every product will be the same and virtually indistinguishable from the other.

The versatility of the contraption is also unmatched. With the able to switch between different tools, a CNC turning center can create various tools quickly. If a piece of machinery does not have the skill required to do so, instead of a long training process, all that is needed is a software update.

Machines also work longer than men and women do. Men and women need food, water, and rest. Machines need none of those. An automated turning center can keep going all day, every day, only needing to be switch off for those rare instances of maintenance.

But automation can be a sore subject, particularly among laborers losing work to machines. No one wants their job taken away by a machine. Many also cry out that people have become too dependent on technology and the old ways are still the best.

Whatever the case, time marches forward. Hands are no longer used to shape rock or steel, but to program code with a keyboard, Controversial as it may be, automation makes for a more efficient workforce, a more streamlined manufacturing process, and for a higher quality product. It does not have to be popular, but automation in all forms in how things are going to be done moving forward. Labor intensive jobs are quickly becoming a thing of the past.
