By Jessica Ellis

Nobody will argue the fact that sight is one of the most valuable and useful gifts any human can hope to have. Those that cannot see or that see very poorly are inevitably excluded from many of the most precious gifts of life. Just think how it would be to be dependant upon others to help one move around, to perform ordinary tasks and to forsake many pleasures associated with sight. Without an ophthalmologist Washington DC patients are more apt to be in this terrible situation

Many people are not sure what the differences between the various practitioners that deal with the eyes are. They think that ophthalmology specialists, opticians and optometrists are all just different names for the same thing. This is not true. Opticians are technicians. There tasks include the design of lenses and contact lenses and other devices aimed at improving the sight. They do not perform any tests and they do not diagnose conditions.

Optometrists focus on primary eye care. They can test eyesight and prescribe corrective measures such as lenses. They can also manage the vision of their patients. They are not medical doctors but they can diagnose sight abnormalities and they can even issue prescriptions for the treatment of certain eye diseases. When a patient suffers from a condition that cannot be treated by the optometrist, then that patient is referred to a specialist.

Visions specialists are called ophthalmologists. These professionals are highly qualified. They first have to qualify as medical doctors and then have to complete gruelling further training for up to eight years before they qualify. They are licensed to practice both medicine and surgery. They can treat any vision related problem but many of them prefer to specialize in specific aspects of the field such as cataracts, glaucoma or conditions affecting the cornea.

The bane of the life of specialists in almost all medical fields is that they so often see patients that suffer from conditions that are already in an advanced stage. It is vital to see at least an optometrist on a regular basis. If he sees any abnormalities he can refer the patient to a specialist Patients should act immediately if they experience double vision, distorted sight, excessive tears, constant redness of the eyes and a feeling of pressure in one or both eyes.

There have been amazing advances in the field of vision. Glaucoma, for example, was one of the most common causes of blindness just a few years ago. Today, this condition can be treated with a very high rate of success. Various conditions concerning the cornea are also now routinely treated. There are thousands of patients that enjoy near perfect sight thanks to the revolutionary new techniques used by specialists nowadays.

Vision problems should never be ignored. When the slightest symptoms of poor vision, pain or other problems with the eyes are experienced help should be found without delay. An optometrist can perform a basic examination and may be able to diagnose the most common problems. If they cannot determine the cause of the symptoms, they will refer the patient to a specialist.

Nobody will deny the fact that eyesight is one of the greatest gifts anyone can enjoy. With modern treatment methods many problems can be solved quickly and efficiently. It is the responsibility of each individual, however, to jealously guard the health of their eyes.
