Looking For And Buying Record Player Needles

By John Sanders

A lot of people own large music collections on vinyl and will need a turntable to play their records. Modern day listeners now use digital mp3 players or CD's and some spares for audio equipment can be difficult to source. When you need to find and buy record player needles, you will have to locate a reputable supplier that can provide a compatible replacement.

A high quality stylus is an extremely important part of your record deck due to the fact that it translates the music from the grooves in the record into audible sound. A very old or badly damaged needle will never produce a good quality audio and it could also damage to your valuable records. There are many types of stylus and it very important to find a well established supplier when you are ordering and buying.

One of the best places to locate replacement styluses is an established audio store in your local area. Many specialist stores are available that will usually carry a stock of needles and they will usually have a compatible match. If they do not stock your particular item, they can contact a maker and order one or get in touch with another supplier and source one for you.

The internet is also a great place to find and buy your needles and there are a large number of reputable online suppliers. You will need to take some time to browse their lists of stock to locate a suitable match and it is helpful to have the serial number of your existing needle. Most of the web based suppliers can also find a needle if you send them a decent photo of your stylus which can be useful for older items that are no longer made.

If a store or internet retailer cannot help you, it can be worth looking at an internet auction site. Many of the sites will have needles in their auctions and you can make an offer or place a bid. If you are unsure about an item you wish to bid on, you can contact the seller to ask for more details, before you commit.

Turntable manufacturers will also supply you with a needle if they have a suitable one in stock. Most of these factories will have good stocks of new, older and often obsolete parts which are available. If they do not stock you item, or they do not sell to the public, they may advise you on where to continue searching.

It is always better to use a manufacturer original needle where possible. Aftermarket items are widely available and will usually do the job but some care should be taken when using non original parts. If you are buying from a high street store it is worth taking along your old needle so that comparisons can be made.

Turntable styluses are fragile items and it is essential to care for them in the correct way. When you buy a stylus it should be kept safely in its box until you are ready to fit it to your deck. Always keep any purchase receipts in case you have to exchange or return a needle or claim a refund.
