Tips To Help You Raise An Alpaca Nashville

By Joyce Taylor

Most people are used to visiting farms to see demonstrations about how to keep sheep, pigs, cows or horses. This is mainly because these are the well-known domestic animals. However, alpaca Nashville, which is a small fluffy South American camelid, is also becoming quite popular. You can choose to start keeping them at home either for their high-quality fur, or just as pets.

People associate llamas and alpacas with South America because this is mainly where they originated from. Currently, there are farms in the States, the UK, and even Asia raising and breeding these animals. If you go looking for alpacas, you will find that there are two breeds which are distinguishable due to their different fur. The suri have fine fleeces which tend to look like small dreadlocks, while the huacaya have more dense coverings. Their wool is softer, easier to manipulate, and also less likely to cause irritation when compared to wool from sheep.

Keeping alpaca is not as challenging as keeping cows, or horses. These creatures are very hardy, meaning you do not need to keep worrying about calling a veterinary. They also do not have hooves, so all you will need to do is sheer of their fleece, at least once a year.

Land size is one thing that may disturb a farmer planning to keep alpacas. However, you can keep about six of them one acre. They will need a pen or a barn where they can sleep, and stay in during extreme weather conditions. When it comes to fencing you can use the normal chain link because they are very easy to control. Although they can jump over fences, these fences need to be low, and this seldom happens.

These animals are curious and pretty intelligent but also come with a range of personalities. You might end up with some that are shy, others which are friendly, and even some which are proud. However, one thing they all have in common is that they are very social. Therefore, keeping them on their own will actually affect their wellbeing.

All animals have a way of showing their aggression, and in camelids, this is mainly by spitting. They mainly spit at humans when you spend too much time with them. You are advised to avoid spending a lot of time with newborn crias, as it will be difficult for them to fit in afterward.

Before you put in all your money into this venture, you need to have a foolproof plan. If you plan on keeping them for wool you need to first identify the market you will sell this wool to. This will also apply if you plan to breed them and sell the young ones.

Doing thorough research is one way of guaranteeing that your project takes off. You can ask around and visit different farms to learn the different things that people are doing. You can also read from books and online sources in order to avoid the common mistakes that beginners make.
