For Best Air Ambulance Edmonton Is The Way To Go

By Laura Gibson

The term air ambulance service is a wide one that involves movement of patients from one place to another using aircrafts. The service revolves around providing patients with medical care in a mobile environment. Different kinds of aircrafts are used including rotor-wing and fixed-wing airplanes. The planes vary in size and capacity. When one needs the services of air ambulance Edmonton in Alberta is one of the best places to consider making a visit to.

The aircrafts utilized usually contain drugs, medications, specialized medical equipment, and medical personnel. Patients get comprehensive, emergency medical services prior to getting to a medical facility. Besides that, the team also rescues and attends to accident victims by offering them medical attention before they are moved by air to medical facilities.

Fixed-wing aircrafts are more useful where long distances are involved because they are faster and can handle such distances. Rotor-wing aircrafts such as helicopters are more applicable in inter-facility transfers and evacuation from accident scenes. Some among the medical equipment found inside such aircrafts include CPR equipment, flight stretchers, monitoring units, EGG, and ventilators. When the aircraft is equipped with medical equipment, patients are given medical attention in flight.

It is not all airplanes used in this operation that have medical personnel and equipment in them. Some only have pilots and lack any medical appliance. They simply move patients from one place to another without giving them medical attention. During accidents, patients are sorted in groups of those that will be moved with aircrafts that are equipped with medical staff and equipment, those to be moved with ordinary aircrafts, and those to be moved by land.

Air ambulance has a long history that is almost as long as that of powered flight itself. However, the service originated in the military, with significant usage in WWI. A good example where the service was used in military was in the Siege of Paris in 1870 where French soldiers were moved back to France using hot-air balloons. Other instances of early applications were in the Korean War and Vietnam War.

The usage of air medical services originated in remote areas of the world as opposed to developed world. The practice began in remote regions including Northern Canada, Australian outback, Scandinavia, and Africa. Later, by 1970s, the United States, Europe, Canada, Australia and other developed regions of the world were employing it heavily. It has been modified and made more sophisticated and efficient over time.

There are situations when transporting a patient using airplanes is more vital than others. One such instance is when one needs to receive medical care, but still needs to be transported over a distance of two hundred and fifty miles. Similarly, elderly patients may not survive the stress, security issues, and inconveniences of commercial airports, which leaves aircraft transportation the only option. Inter-facility transfer has also become easier to accomplish through this means.

Receiving this service comes at a high cost. Several factors influence how much one pays for the services. Some among the factors that influence cost include aircraft type, distance travelled, and condition of the patient. It costs more to move a critically ill patient over long distances than over short ones.
